Native Aotearoa pt.2

Task:  After visiting Shag Point, you hop back in the van and drive all the way up the east coast of the south island until you reach the town of Picton. You get out of the van and onto the Interislander ferry. It travels back across the Cook Strait to Wellington. Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and every winter the city hosts a huge Matariki festival to celebrate the Maori New Year. This year part of the festival is being held at Te Papa, a big museum in Wellington. Read about the Matariki festival at Te Papa.  There are so many different things to see and do at the festival this year.

Te whare matoro: Haka fusion
Tiramarama: storytelling for kids
Kaumatua kapa haka

 Te Whare Mataro were iwi-community based 'houses' of entertainment for young people. They used to be the 'night club' of the pa (village). For this young men and women would participate in entertainment by the younger people from all around the world.


Tiramarama: is a programme of storytelling for young children. Said in both Maori and English, the aim for this is to entertain and delight the young kids. As winter gets close to finishing around us the matariki stars rise. The storytellers Te kahureremoa Taumata and khali phillips-babara try to help celebrate boy sharing knowledge, stories and songs.
Kaumatua Kapa Haka: is a two day celebration of haka and waiata. It is performed by senior maori performing artists from all over New Zealand. This is a regular feature on the matariki calendar. The kapa haka group is performed by the older generation.

    Kia ora Cameo,

    I must admit that I have the same question (query) as Olivia. Out of the three events that you listed above, which one would you most like to attend? If I had to choose one, I think that I could like to go to the Kauamatua Kapa Haka. I absolutely love song and dance and could watch kapa haka performances every day, all day.

      I would also like to go to the Kaumatua Kapa Haka the most as well.
